The around 300 member societies of TSV are a diverse group of research communities in a variety of fields. We interviewed three learned societies that represent different fields of science and differ from each other in terms of their age, size and operating methods. In their stories, they tell us about their members and activities and about what makes their community meaningful.
The approximately 220 members of the Finnish Maritime Archaeological Society study and protect underwater cultural heritage. Run entirely by volunteers, the society carries out the majority of maritime archaeological fieldwork and basic research in Finland. It is also the only Finnish learned society accredited by UNESCO.
Founded in 2016, the Society for Cultural History promotes the teaching, research and public awareness of cultural history. Open to everyone, the society organises lectures and other events and connects Finnish cultural history research with the international academic community.
Founded in 1921, Ursa is one of Finland’s largest scientific associations, with more than 18,000 members. It makes knowledge about the universe accessible to everyone through publications, public events, courses and amateur astronomy activities.
