Open access publishing services

TSV maintains two services for open access publishing of Finnish scholarly publications. Journal.fi is intended for journals and yearbooks, while Edition.fi is for books. Both services provide tools for managing the entire publication process and open access web publishing.

Publication services for scholarly journals and books

Journal.fi and Edition.fi support domestic science publishing by providing an open access publication platform for scholarly journals and books. Journal.fi and Edition.fi are a key part of the Finnish open scholarly publishing infrastructure. The services enhance the visibility and accessibility of research, support the status of Finnish and Swedish as languages of science, and provide publishers with a technical platform, training and expert support.

Journal.fi

Journal.fi is an open publication service for Finnish scholarly journals and yearbooks. This service launched in 2017 brings together more than 150 scholarly journals and yearbooks of different disciplines. The service publishes both Finnish and international research.

Publishing process in a single system

Journal.fi and Edition.fi align the different stages of the publication process in a single system. In these services you can receive manuscripts, manage the editorial and peer review processes, monitor the progress of manuscripts, maintain the metadata of publications, and publish finished articles and books openly online. The information, messages and documents of the publication process are stored at a single location, making it easier for the editorial board to collaborate and manage publications.

Journal.fi uses the Open Journal Systems (OJS) and Edition.fi Open Monograph Press (OMP). Both are open source publishing systems developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), which are widely used in scholarly publishing around the world.

For whom are the services intended?

Journal.fi and Edition.fi are intended for Finnish publishers of scholarly publications. The services can be used by TSV member societies and other Finnish publishers. The terms of use and the fees charged for the service vary depending on whether the publisher is a TSV member society or some other publisher.

Terms of use of Journal.fi

Using Journal.fi is free of charge for TSV member societies. Open access to the articles must be provided no later than one year after their publication. The service can also be used by subscription-based journals for the reception and editorial process of manuscripts. The publication does not have to be peer reviewed, and it does not need to have a Publication Forum classification.

Other Finnish science publishers can also use Journal.fi against the fees set out in the price list for the open access publishing services. Publications must meet the following conditions:

  • The publication is immediately and fully open.
  • The publication comes out regularly at least once a year.
  • The publication contains scientific research outcomes.
  • The publication is published by a Finnish publisher, or a co-publication that includes a Finnish publisher.

The scientific quality of the publication can be demonstrated by such means as a Publication Forum classification or TSV peer review label.

Terms of use of Edition.fi

TSV member societies can use Edition.fi free of charge. Books published in the service must be openly accessible to everyone.

The service can also be used for the reception and editorial process of manuscripts for books sold against a fee. The book need not be peer reviewed and the publisher does not need to have a Publication Forum classification, but the work must have an ISBN.

Other Finnish science publishers can also apply for a right to use Edition.fi. The fee shown on the price list for open access publishing services will be charged for using the service. The publications approved for the service must be scholarly book publications, and the publisher must be Finnish or domiciled in Finland.

Join the service

A publisher planning a new scholarly publication can contact TSV already at the planning stage, even if the publication did not yet meet all the terms of use of the service. TSV will help the publisher assess if Journal.fi or Edition.fi is suitable for the planned publication.

Joining the service progresses in cooperation with TSV:

  1. Read the terms of use of the service.
  2. Contact TSV.
  3. Participate in system user training.
  4. Once you have completed the training and possible testing, TSV will set up a website for the publication in Journal.fi or Edition.fi.

Training

TSV organises remote training in using the OJS and OMP systems for users of Journal.fi and Edition.fi. The training introduces users to the key functionalities of the systems and the management of the publication process. The training takes around two hours. TSV member societies can participate in the training free of charge. Other publishers will be charged the fee shown on the service price list.

Training relating to the OJS system used in Journal.fi is organised at pre-announced dates. Training relating to the OMP system used in Edition.fi will be agreed upon separately with each publisher.

Training on the use of DOIs is also organised for Journal.fi service users. DOIs are used subject to a separate agreement with TSV. If necessary, Edition.fi service users can familiarise themselves with using DOIs in connection with OMP training.

Maintenance and development

TSV is responsible for maintaining and developing the services in close cooperation with scholarly journals, publishers and other stakeholders. The services are continuously developed in line with open science policies and user needs. In addition, TSV has been involved for ten years in developing the existing Open Journal Systems and Open Monograph Press system as part of the Public Knowledge Project developer community.
